United Way recently recognized the top ten schools participating in the 2013 MLK Service Project.

2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Project A Huge Success!

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life vision and commitment to the causes of both civil rights and public service, United Way of the CSRA, with the help of the Richmond County Board of Education Schools and AmeriCorps*VISTA Members, hosted the 2013 Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Project. This year saw more RCBE students getting involved in community service, with some 1,000 students participating, as well as greater participation from area high schools.

In honor of Dr. King at the March 2013 RCBE Board Meeting, United Way President/CEO Laverne H. Gold recognized the top 10 schools that participated in helping make a difference in our community through their commitment to the ideals and virtues championed by Dr. King with a Certificate of Appreciate and gift basket.

Collectively, Richmond County Schools donated over 3,282 items, with an estimated value of $6, 300.  Additionally, 601 items were collected from participating area hotels, with an estimated value of $400, bringing a total of 3,883 items and a total estimated value of $6,700. This strong and unforgettable act of kindness helped United Way’s AmeriCorps*VISTA members provide 1,545 emergency hygiene kits to the homeless, seniors in the Senior Food Box Program, and RCBE students and their families experiencing the effects of poverty.
