AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) Service Opportunity
Are you looking for an opportunity to serve your community by helping build new nonprofit programs, recruit volunteers and mentors, increase donations, spread its message, perform public service projects, and help children and families in need?
United Way serves as intermediary sponsor for PROJECT UNITE and places VISTA Members at host agency sites in the CSRA to help strengthen their internal capacity to serve homeless and low-income individuals and families experiencing poverty in Richmond County and 12 rural counties in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). We are currently looking for one (1) highly professional VISTA member to serve for one-year and be placed in the Mayor's Office in Augusta, Georgia, to build a new MY BROTHER'S KEEPER initiative in our community.
What is MY BROTHER'S KEEPER? It is an opportunity to reach out in our community (Augusta-Richmond County) and recruit and train mentors to help unlock the full educational potential for our young people including boys and young men of color. The purpose is to ensure children enter school ready to learn, are reading at grade level by 3rd grade, and graduate from high school ready for college and a career.
The successful candidate will receive a living allowance of $447 every two weeks, child care, health, vision, and dental benefits, 20 days paid time off. They will also receive a Segal education award of $5,730 at the end of the year of service that can be used towards college or payment of student loans. The position requires 35 hours of service each week and local travel. Current federal benefits you may be receiving upon entering the program will not be reduced as this is a federally protected volunteer program.
If you have a heart for working with people to help children succeed in life, have good organizational and leadership skills, and can recruit and train mentors and volunteers, this could be the opportunity that you are looking for. This is a great position for college students as VISTAs may now have outside employment and be attending college or completing an internship while serving. The VISTA position will start July 20, 2015m with a week of training in Atlanta, Georgia.
