United Way of the CSRA’s Summer AmeriCorps* VISTA Program
Engaging Students in Summer Learning
United Way truly believes that an investment in quality summer programs is an investment in our children’s future. During this past summer, United Way’s 21 VISTA Summer Associates had the opportunity to work with area nonprofits to strengthen their capacity to serve Title 1 eligible school students and engage them in quality summer service-learning programs.
• 20 nonprofit host agency sites were provided with VISTA Summer Associates to support summer educational programs and services, obtain in-kind donations, and develop partnerships to support nonprofit sustainability.
• 1,828 Title 1 students enrolled in summer programs were provided with mentoring and tutoring in Math and English and a host of health, physical education, and life skills training to prevent summer learning loss and enhance career development.
• 5,600 volunteer hours were given by VISTA Summer Associates.
• 75 community volunteers were recruited by VISTA Summer Associates who have committed themselves to community volunteerism efforts for an additional year.
Success Story: A Child Learns to Pay Attention
As a first grader, Ty could rarely complete even simple tasks in school because of distractions. His first grade teacher would give his class a simple assignment and set out a timer, but Ty was distracted and did not complete his assignment. After attending a summer learning program at Boys & Girls Club and working one-on-one with one of United Way’s VISTA Summer Associates, Ty has learned how to focus better and become less distracted. Well, every once in a while – he is still a nine year old boy!
Ty is an intelligent and very lively nine year old and even developed an interest in computers during the summer. With his ability to stay focused on his studies continuing to develop, Ty could someday make a great technical engineer or computer programmer.
