COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS LEND A HELPING HAND
It was a magnificent year for United Way of the CSRA’s Project Serve Day-of-Caring on April 23, 2010! The community’s participation increased significantly from last year with nearly 300 volunteers representing 16 different organizations participating. These volunteers completed projects throughout 15 local nonprofits, both United Way partner and non-partner agencies. Projects included building updates, painting, landscaping, fence installation, and much more.
Volunteer labor saves agencies hundreds of dollars in maintenance and repair fees, and then those savings go toward providing more services for individuals and families in need. This year’s estimated value of Project Serve volunteer labor was $29,625. What a wonderful show of support for the community, and the improvements made to these facilities will ultimately benefit hundreds of individuals within the CSRA!
The agencies receiving the donated labor were Augusta Rescue Mission; Augusta Training Shop; Augusta Urban Ministries; the Berry Center; the Boys & Girls Clubs of AUGUSTA; Communities in Schools of Burke County; The Family Y; Friendship Community Center; Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia; Heritage Academy (Fireside Ministries); Phinizy Swamp Nature Park; Safe Homes of Augusta; The Salvation Army; Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center; St. Stephen’s Ministry of Augusta; and Wimberly House.
This year’s event was sponsored by Akima, Rotary of Downtown Augusta, AT&T, Blanchard and Calhoun Real Estate Co., Comcast, First Bank, Georgia Power, IntelliSystems, P&G, and Southern Nuclear. Volunteers from AmeriCorps VISTA, ADP, Atlanta Gas Light Company, Augusta Service Company/Austin, DSM Chemicals, First Bank of Georgia, Home Depot, John Deere, Morgan Stanley, Plant Vogtle, Procter & Gamble Manufacturing Company, Rotary of Downtown Augusta, Security Federal Bank, Solvay and The SRS Team spent the day performing projects ranging from painting and landscaping to playground installation.
