Your contributions to United Way of the CSRA help provide funding for these vital health and human service programs that make a difference in the lives of local citizens every day. 

 

 

24 Hour Crisis Intervention

Provides a 24 hour-7 day a week Crisis Hotline and Emergency Shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children.

 

Adapted Programs

Provide land and water programs for physically and mentally challenged children and adults, allowing them to increase their physical skills and find success in living more independent lives. 

 

Adult Volunteer Development

Recruit, train, utilize, and recognize volunteers who support every Red Cross program.  Disaster volunteers receive free training in preparing for and responding to disasters.

 

Adult Volunteer Development

Provides a systematic approach for recruting, training, and retaininig adult Souting volunteers, ensuring that adult volunteers are highly-killed and prepared to work directly or indirectly with girls.  Lastly, it adds an additional dedicated adult in the girls' lives giving them a stronger support network.

 

After-School & Evening School

Sponsors two community-based and four school-based after-school programs to serve high-risk students grades 1-12.  The after-school programs offer homework assistance, recreational activities, cultural enrichment activities, and daily snacks.

 

After-School Program

Provides a comprehensive youth development program serving at-risk youth ages 6-18.  For an annual $10 membership fee, the Clubs provide youth with programs in education and career development, health and life skills, character and leadership development, the arts, sports, fitness, and recreation.

 

After-School & Summer Tutorial Day Camp

Provide a dynamic program geared towards engaging and uplifting youth by building leadership skills, self-esteem, scholarship, physical health, and community engagement. Committed towards enabling youth to successfully position themselves socially, civically, academically and professionally.

 

Armed Forces Emergency Services

Provides emergency communications and referrals to members of the Armed Services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including death, serious illness, or birth of a child messages; health and welfare; and other family emergencies.

 

Camps/Outdoor Education

Provide day camps and outdoor education programs to allow children the opportunity to experience the natural enviornment.  Lessons are centered around responsibility for the earth, team building, and diversity.

 

Children’s Violin Classes

Provide two violin training classes for Heritage Academy students, grades 1- 3 and grades 3-7. Violins, materials, instruction, and repairs are provided for the children.

 

Community Cupboard

Provides the only food pantry (offering a wide variety of food and personal hygiene items) in the community for individuals and families infected with HIV/AIDS. 

 

Counseling and Casework

Provide senior citizens with access, information, directions, guidance, referral, and assistance to remain safely at home.  Also offers community education, etc. on a wide variety of subjects pertaining to the elderly or disabled, and completes home assessments prior to in-home senior companion placements.

 

Crisis Counseling and Intervention

Provides crisis intervention and counseling services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to men, women, and children who are in need of services, medical accompaniment, legal advocacy, and outreach services to victims of sexual assault and their families.

 

Disaster Preparation and Relief

Provides emergency assistance to meet immediate needs for families affected by disaster, to alleviate undue hardship and suffering, including food, clothing, shelter, medications, mental health and health services, formula, toiletries, etc.

 

Donor Hearing Aid Program

Provides hearing testing and amplification (hearing aids) at no cost for persons who do not have financial means (determined through financial counseling).   UW funding pays to refurbish the donated hearing aids.

 

Emergency Shelter

Provide homeless men, women and children with a safe place to sleep at night, including dinner and breakfast.  Men stay on a single night basis; women and children are allowed to stay until they can move into permanent housing.

 

Health and Safety Education

Provides training to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to occupational, community, and family health and safety emergencies.  Training includes CPR, First Aid, water safety, lifeguarding, babysitting, pet first aid, sports safety, etc. 

 

Income-Based Child Care

Provide income-based childcare allowing parents to work knowing their children are being cared for in safe and healthy surroundings.  Children learn developmental skills from trained and certified staff who care for their emotional and physical needs.

 

Income-Based Memberships

Provide income-based memberships to The Family Y allowing people to improve their own lives as well as those of their family  through a variety of healthy programs and services. 

 

Individual and Family Counseling

Provide individual, couple and family counseling services by a licensed masters level counselor with the goal of improving individual and family functionality. 

 

Information & Resource Center

Offers a information and resource center with information for parents, students, and the general public.  Resources include printed material on social services in the community; lending library of videos, books, SAT, and GED information; computer lab with internet access; and facilities for workshops, meetings, classes, and other activities, etc.

 

In-Home Senior Companion Program

Pairs low-income volunteers, aged 60 and older, with adults who have difficulty with simple tasks of day-to-day living and allows the senior to remain safely at home with help from a peer.

 

Learning for Life / Exploring

Provide a co-ed program focused on character development, career education, ethical decision-making, esteem building,  and leadership development for all ages. 

 

Mentoring

Provides individual, class or group mentors who serve as an adult friend or community partner to students in grades PreK-12.  Mentors are trained and commit to spend at least 30 minutes per week with students.

 

Outreach Program

Provides Girl Scout programming to girls who lack either the resources or the volunteer leaders necessary to participate in a traditional troop.  Trained staff ensure all girls have the same opportunity to benefit from strong leadership models that help assist in positive educational attainment.

 

Prepared Meals

Provide a free evening meal 365 days a year to anyone in the community who is hungry, with no specific criteria requirements.

 

Prevention Education

Provides community education and professional training, and increases public awareness of sexual assault by promoting attitudes, behaviors, and social conditions that will reduce and ultimately eliminate sexual violence.

 

Reading Tutorial

Pairs students grades K-5 with individual reading tutors to help improve their reading levels. Also provide a six-week theme-focused reading program during the summer.

 

Rehabilitation for Chronic Mental Illness

Provide a state recognized peer support center, where members recovering from emotional and mental disorders participate in activities that promote recovery.

 

Scouting Scholarships

Provide a scholarship program to meet the needs of all young people who have a desire to participate in the various programs and activities of Scouting but cannot because of limited financial resources.  Scholarships also help support the outreach of Scouting to unserved areas and populations.

 

Scoutreach / Special Needs Scouting

Provide a non-traditional delivery of Scouting programs adapted to meet the needs of youth who would not otherwise be able to easily participate in traditional Scouting programs. 

 

Senior Recreation /Education Activities

Provide seniors with information and screenings on wellness, healthy lifestyles, and disease prevention.

Helps seniors to get and stay physically and mentally active through a number of classes, monthly programs, and trip opportunities.

 

Sheltered Employment for the Handicapped

Provides employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, whether mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities.

 

Summer Camp

Provides a comprehensive summer enrichment camp for at-risk youth, including recreation, the arts, and field trips. The program uses a thematic approach to hands-on learning and implements high-yield learning activities to prevent learning loss over the summer months. 

 

Support Groups and Education

Provides Life Skill Classes, Parenting Classes, and Support Groups for residential clients as well as non-residential clients.  Also, provides TANF Orientations for clients who apply for TANF funds which educates DFCS Employees and the community about DV and its affects. 

 

Teen Leadership Training

Provides a leadership initiative for middle school, high school and alternative school students that promotes positive social values. Includes a two-week summer leadership camp where students participate in motivational workshops that focus on building self-esteem, leadership skills, community involvement, personal accountability, and critical thinking skills.

 

Traditional Scouting

Provide Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting & Venturing programs designed to teach a young person to reach their full potential.  All programs are age specific and provide opportunities for growth in citizenship, character development, and physical fitness.

 

Transitional Housing/Job Skills Training

Provide housing to men who are unable to succeed in life and are living on the streets.  Through individual life assessments, case management, goal setting, and job skills training, assist the men in becoming self-sufficient, productive citizens.

 

Traveling Troop

Provide a year-round scouting program that reaches over 700 girls throughout the CSRA, many from single-parent , low socio-economic families, often lacking reliable transportation. Traveling Troop allows girls to participate in educational activities, understand volunteerism, and benefit from character development that Girl Scouts provides.

 

Youth Leadership Development

Provides a comprehensive leadership training and service program for middle and high school students.  Youth help people who have been affected by disasters, work with physically and mentally challenged people, teach safety skills to younger children, and conduct leadership conferences.   

 

Youth Sports

Allow children to develop new physical as well as emotional skills through a variety of sport activities.  Led by trained volunteers with a vested interest in helping children experience new things through the fun and cooperation that sports offers.
