CHARACTER-BUILDING MATTERS

Octavius Davis, Boy Scouts of America, Georgia-Carolina Council, took seven fortunate Scouts from the CSRA to Cimarron, New Mexico, to participate in a scouting program at the Philmont Scout Ranch. This is a high-adventure Boy Scout ranch where 20,000 scouts (each summer) from all over the world undertake a 12-day, 50 mile trek through the mountainous terrain of New Mexico.

The scouts travel an average of 7 miles per day, with backpacks filled with all their necessities. Their day begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends around 8:30 p.m. or later. Along the route there are projects/tasks that they must complete, and they travel from one campsite to another, lodging at established campsites each night.

This adventure allowed the Scouts (many inner-city youth) to experience things they had never experienced before. At the ranch, the Scouts gained a sense of accomplishment, they learned about the importance of teamwork, about bonding, and their self-esteem and confidence was built-up. This is a character-building experience for the Scouts. And, your donations to United Way make this experience possible.
