On Monday, August 27th, AmeriCorps*VISTAs serving through United Way of the CSRA’s intermediary sponsorship had a great day with Congressman Barrow! The Congressman was in Augusta, GA touring some of United Way’s VISTA host agency sites, like the American Red Cross (ARC), as part of his Georgia Safe Tour. At ARC, the Congressman met one of United Way’s former VISTAs, Tiffany Tyree, who was hired at the site after her term of service. He then met with current VISTA, Olivia Garrison, Joan Stoddard, United Way Community Building Coordinator and VISTA Supervisor, as well as ARC staff, where he gained valuable knowledge about the local VISTA program and how Olivia is helping ARC build safety and disaster services throughout the CSRA. As Hurricane Isaac moves across the Gulf Coast, she and the ARC disaster team are helping ready volunteers to deploy to help in the aftermath. Locally she has been working with area flooding victims after heavy rains fell in the CSRA Saturday. A total of 12 families affected by flooding, including 20 adults and 9 children have been helped with emergency shelter and supportive services. After touring ARC, the Congressman joined 22 VISTAs at the 2012 United Way Kickoff Luncheon to learn how other VISTAs are serving. He was very impressed to learn that five VISTAs have been offered employment after their term of service is completed in November 2012, one of which is a Veteran serving at the Augusta Warrior Project. Upon leaving, Congressman Barrow stated he was very impressed with all of VISTAs, their hard work, and thanked them for their volunteer service. He stated we can count on his vote in Congress to continue the Corporation for National & Community Service and our AmeriCorps*VISTA program!
