United Way Of The CSRA To Help Children In Need

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 7, 2013

400 Families Received Food and Essentials Through the Generosity of Teleperformance and Feed the Children

On Wednesday, December 19, 2012, FEED THE CHILDREN, one of the largest international charities in the United States, delivered a semi tractor-trailer full of food and essentials to United Way of the CSRA to help children in need, thanks to the generosity of a local company, Teleperformance. AmeriCorps*VISTAs, along with United Way and Teleperformance staff, were on hand to help distribute the items to 400 families, pre-identified by United Way and their partner agencies as in-need and suffering through the current economic downturn.  Of this total, 50 families were served from Burke County, a county in United Way’s service area that the U.S. Census Bureau recently ranked No. 1 in the nation in child poverty.  The truck arrived with 24 pallets, equaling over 800 boxes of non-perishable food items and personal care items, as well as miscellaneous products such as bottled water.  Each family received approximately 38 pounds of products.

According to the Georgia KIDS COUNT, the number of children living in poverty has steadily increased for four years, with more than 575,000 children living in poverty.  In 42 Georgia counties, 75% or more of school-age children qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

“We are so thankful to FEED THE CHILDREN and Teleperformance and their employees for helping to provide food and essentials to children and their families in the CSRA.  United Way and our VISTAs were pleased to be able to assist in helping fight the battle of poverty,” said La Verne Gold, President/CEO of United Way of the CSRA.
