The final championship game pitted American Family Insurance against The Family Y with The Family Y taking home the Championship with a 48 to 45 win.

Eight teams from local businesses stepped-up to compete in the tournament which was sponsored by Presenting Sponsor: American Family Insurance, and Media Sponsors: The Augusta Chronicle and WJBF News Channel 6.  Saturday’s line-up of teams included:  American Family Insurance vs. Team Excavating; Electrolux vs. Kellogg’s; Paine College vs. The Holy Rollers (HP Trucking and Tabernacle Baptist Church); Television Park All Stars (WJBF) vs. The Family Y.  On Sunday, competitors in the semi-final games included:  American Family Insurance vs. Kellogg’s, and The Holy Rollers vs. The Family Y.

For the second year, the event was organized by a group of young professionals.  Led by Co-Chairs, Liz Pinkus-McKechnie and Tonia Gibbons, the committee also included Gabriel Gadson from Paine College, Bianca Woodard from Electrolux (last year’s winners), and Tom Wiley from WJBF News Channel 6.  The committee has worked diligently over the past four months to pull together the teams and many volunteers needed for a successful event.

United Way would like to thank everyone who participated in the event and those who came out to support their favorite team.  Jay Jefferies, WAGT, volunteered to call the games on Saturday and Sunday and did a tremendous job of keeping everything on track as well as making it a fun event.  Other volunteers who were on hand to help included Emily Bordon (Miss Augusta 2014), Helen Dinkins (We Got Character) who showed up with Spiderman, and Tony Williams and Alden Beard (Po Boy Productions) who provided music for the event.  A special thanks to Aaron Stewart and Donald Stone who secured referees for the event, and Cheddars, Chop House, Coca-Cola, Cracker Barrel, Kellogg’s, T’s Seafood, and Walmart for their help in supporting the event.  We’d also like to thank Paine College for allowing us to hold the event at the HEAL Complex.

United Way looks forward to hosting the 3rd Annual Basketball Tournament in March 2015, and we hope other companies will make plans to join us with a team next year.

United Way Recognizes Outstanding Community Partners at 2014 Annual Meeting

A full house of more than 600 local business leaders and community volunteers attended United Way of the CSRA’s 2014 Annual Meeting on Tuesday, February 25, at The Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center. The meeting wrapped up the organization’s 2013 campaign effort to raise $4.1 million for locally funded health and human service programs. Continuing with its Derby Day theme from the Kickoff last August, United Way treated guests to a Party in the Park for their Post Race Celebration and announced that $4,128,764 was raised by the community.

The event was presented through the generosity of several local corporate sponsors: Premiere Sponsor: Savannah River Nuclear Solutions; Presenting Sponsors: American Family Insurance and Southern Nuclear Operating Company-Plant Vogtle; Presidential Sponsors: Bienvenidos Press, Georgia Power and University Health Care System; and Executive Sponsor: Electrolux.

Thomas Blanchard III, United Way’s 2013 Campaign Chair, acknowledged the remarkable accomplishment stating that, “We’ve seen great successes and yes, a few challenges, but overall this has been a tremendous year”. He also thanked the many volunteers and supporters who worked together to accomplish this goal.

The event was hosted by WJBF News Channel 6 personalities Jennie Montgomery and Brad Means. Apollo’s Fifth Choir from Hephzibah High School was on hand to entertain the crown and performed an original tune written for United Way by the choir members. In other event news, United Way chose the Annual Meeting to present several key awards:

And, special awards were presented to five companies who each raised over $100,000 for the 2013 Campaign: Club Car, International Paper, Kelloggs, Publix Super Markets, and Southern Nuclear Operating Company.

Publix Super Markets, Inc. was announced as the winner of the Triple Crown.
