4th Annual United Way Basketball Tournament A Great Success!

United Way of the CSRA hosted the 4th Annual Basketball Tournament on March 19 at the Family YMCA Wilson Branch. Eight teams from local businesses participated in the tournament which was sponsored by Presenting Sponsor: American Family Insurance, and Media Sponsors: The Augusta Chronicle and WJBF News Channel 6.

There were exciting and close matchups with: Beasley Broadcasting Group vs. Television Park Allstars; Savannah River Nuclear Solutions vs. The Wilson Family YMCA; Richmond County Sheriff’s Office vs. Tabernacle Baptist Church; and Columbia County vs. Richmond County. The much anticipated finals took place between: The Wilson Y and Tabernacle Church. Congratulations to The Wilson Family YMCA who took the Championship…defeating Tabernacle 58 – 39.

United Way hosted a sold out crowd of 600 at the 2016 Annual Meeting and Gold Rush Celebration.

United Way of the CSRA Hosts 2016 Annual Meeting

A sold our crowd of 600 local business leaders and community volunteers attended United Way of the CSRA’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday, February 23, at The Augusta Marriott Hotel. Continuing with its Western Roundup theme from the Kickoff last August, United Way treated their guests to a “Gold Rush Celebration”…honoring our community’s spirit of giving.

 

Scott Johnson and Scott Peebles, United Way’s Co-Chairs for the 2015 Campaign, announced that United Way had exceeded their campaign goal by raising $3,502,323. They also reported that the Combined Federal Campaign and the Federal workforce raised $544,531. They acknowledged the remarkable accomplishments stating that, “We’ve seen great successes and a few challenges, but overall this has been a tremendous year”. They thanked the many volunteers and supporters who worked together to accomplish this outstanding goal.

 

The event was hosted by WJBF News Channel 6 personalities Jennie Montgomery and Brad Means. Dancers from Rhythm and Class Dance Studio were on hand to perform several high-stepping square dance routines. Ron Skenes, Director of Christ Community Health Services (a United Way partner agency), was guest speaker for the event. He shared about the importance of United Way funding for the partner agencies and how they are changing the lives of local residents for the better every day through the generous donations of the community.

 

In other event news, United Way chose the Annual Meeting to present several key awards. The 2015 Alvin W. Vogtle Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Mark Maund. Keith Taber, Vice President, Plant Vogtle, presented the award along with a check for $2,000 to be donated to a charity of choice. Mr. Maund, who was nominated by Boys & Girls Clubs of the CSRA, is well-known throughout the community for his passion and drive to make a difference in the community by working with various nonprofits.

 

The 2015 Spirit of Community Award, which is given to the company who is committed to running a model United Way Campaign, was presented to Georgia Power.  Their high standards for giving back to the community through contributions and volunteerism exemplify true leadership at all levels, corporately and individually.

The Pillar Circle Award of Excellence was presented to Savannah River Nuclear Solutions and Southern Nuclear Operating Company. Both of these companies value the communities in which they work and live. Their fundraising efforts and support impacts the quality of life in the CSRA in a positive way.

The Award of Outstanding Achievement was presented to three companies who each raised over $100,000 for the 2015 Campaign: International Paper, Kellogg’s, and Savannah River Remediation.

The Award of Distinction was presented to two companies who raised $ 300,000 or more: Club Car and Publix Supermarkets.

Special awards were presented to four Employee Campaign Managers whose enthusiasm, leadership and passion resulted in thriving campaigns. The recipients of this award were: Veronica Freeman, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office; Mandy Lemon, Blanchard & Calhoun; Geraldin López, Electrolux Major Appliances; and Bill Wolfe, MAU Workforce Solutions.

The event was presented through the generosity of several local corporate sponsors: Premiere Sponsor: Savannah River Nuclear Solutions; Presenting Sponsors: American Family Insurance, MAU Workforce Solutions, and Southern Nuclear Operating Company – Plant Vogtle; Presidential Sponsors: Doctors Hospital, Georgia Power, Savannah River Remediation, and University Health Care System; and Executive Sponsor: Blanchard & Calhoun.
