Help United Way STUFF THE BUS
On August 1, United Way will partner with local Walmarts and Boards of Education to STUFF THE BUS with school supplies for at risk youth in our community. Volunteers will be at Walmart Supercenters located at Bobby Jones Expressway, Deans Bridge Road, Evans, and Waynesboro from 10:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. to collect donations of school supplies or cash donations (which will be used to purchase supplies). Please plan to join us on Saturday, August 1, and help us stuff the big yellow bus located in front of the stores. CLICK HERE for a list of needed school supplies.
Born Learning Program Reaches Rural Pre-School Children
The Change Happens Foundation has awarded United Way of the CSRA with a project grant to provide outreach services to low-income families with preschool children in rural areas served by the organization.
By age 4, children who live below the poverty line in our community are 18 months behind what is normal for their age groups; by age 10 that gap is still present. For children living in the poorest families, the gap is even larger. By the time children from middle income families with well-educated parents are in 3rd grade, they know about 12,000 words. Third grade children from low-income and homeless families with under-educated parents have a vocabulary of about 4,000 words, one-third as many words as middle income peers. Read More.
United Way Receives Additional AmeriCorps*VISTA Grants
United Way of the CSRA has received an additional AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America) grant to place seven (7) associates for a Summer VISTA program. These young associates will work ten-weeks with area nonprofits. These nonprofits run intensive service-learning based programs with the goal of increasing the number of youth who see themselves as change agents in their community. United Way expects that a total of 300 at-risk, homeless and special needs youth will be served. This program will help United Way strengthen nonprofit capacity to provide quality services that mobilize the community to create lasting changes as well as have a positive impact on youth adopting healthy lifestyles. United Way Hosts 8th Annual Golf Classic

Twenty teams played in this year’s tournament, and proceeds from the event will serve as first dollars for United Way’s 2009 Campaign. The tournament ended with dinner sponsored by The Knox Foundation as well as presentation of the “Windsor Cup” sponsored by Windsor Jewelers. First place winners were Jim Beck, Bill Houseman, and Milton Steinberg from United Distributors and Jerry Sapp from Publix. Brad Pond, Christian Seklecki, and Scott Vasquez from ESI Acquisitions came in second place; and third place winners from Olin Corporation were Dave Blair, Jim Heron, Earl Hilson, and Mike Johnson. Event sponsors included: A.B. Beverage, Beverage South, Coco-Cola Bottling Company, Georgia Power, Knology, The Knox Foundation, Milton Ruben Toyota, National Distributors, Savannah River Banking Company, and United Distributors. It is my privilege to announce a new movement that United Way of America launched in June 2008 and Jeff Spears, our Board Chair, introduced at our Campaign Kickoff on August 25, 2008. It’s called LIVE UNITED, and it’s about advancing the common good in communities all across the country.
Advancing the common good is about creating opportunities for a better life for everyone in the CSRA. The premise is that everyone deserves opportunities to have a good life. A good life consists of a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health. That’s why United Way is focusing our work on the building blocks for a good life: Education, Income and Health. And, I will tell you that, like many other local United Way’s, we are not there yet, but this is where we’re headed. READ MORE.
